The majority of spectroscopic surveys assume local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) during the modeling of stellar spectra. This assumption begins to break down for luminous stars, like the red giants targeted by SDSS-V's Milky Way Mapper Survey in its Galactic Genesis program.
