High-statistics simulations of NewAthena WFI background using Geant4

Abstract

The observation of hot gas structures is one science goal of the Wide Field Imager (WFI) on ESA's NewAthena X-ray observatory. Because the measurement of these faint diffuse sources is limited by background from cosmic ray particle interactions within the instrument, understanding and reducing this background is critical.
