Abstract
Type I X-ray bursts are powered by unstable thermonuclear burning on the surface of accreting neutron stars in close binary systems. These brief X-ray flashes, with light curves featuring rise times of $1-10$ s, durations of $10-100$ s, and recurrence periods of hours to days, represent the most frequent stellar explosions in our Galaxy.
