Recent advances in high-contrast exoplanet imaging instrumentation have introduced the concept of adaptive coronagraphy. For example, liquid-crystal-on-silicon spatial light modulators can be used as programmable phase masks or digital micro-mirror devices as configurable pupil apodizers.
